For many Londoners, their New Year's resolutions will likely be to get a new job - well, there's none quite as 'iconic London' as fronting the Tube which keeps the capital moving. If that sounds like you, then you better get your best covering letter and CV ready as applications are now open for both part-time and full-time customer service roles on London Underground.
History Of The London Underground
As Tube-related jobs are so in demand, thanks to the additional free Transport for London (TfL) travel perks, the opportunity to come by jobs is rare, with usually no more than one recruitment campaign per year for general roles. That's why these openings are likely to be quickly snapped up by demand, so may close earlier than the January 15 deadline. Get your skates - or Tubegeekery - on!
Two positions are being recruited for: Full-time Customer Service Assistants (£30, 381/year, 35hrs/week), who mainly help passengers in stations, and part-time Night Tube Customer Service Assistants (£16, 692/year, 15hrs/week Friday and Saturday overnight) who keep stations orderly on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines each weekend. Both positions come with free travel for you on the TfL network, a 75% reimbursement scheme on National Rail, up to 37 days annual leave per year and cheaper tickets on Eurostar. You cannot apply for both positions.
The recruitment process is in three stages, including an online application form, an online test and an assessment centre, where you will be tasked to work individually and in teams in a number of scenarios. You must be over 18 with a right to work in the UK to be eligible. TfL also asks for some flexibility in shift patterns. Full-timers may have to start as early as 4.30am or finish as late as 1.30am.

The job is not easy, but can be certainly very rewarding. spent a shift with Alexis, a customer service assistant at Notting Hill Gate, earlier this year to better understand what it's like to represent the iconic TfL brand on the frontline. In Alexis' words: It sounds simple, but it's a lot!
Famously, London Underground does not directly recruit external candidates to Tube driver positions, so this is one of the ways any prospective Tube drivers may want to join TfL for the later chance of applying internally for that role once an opening arises. To apply for the roles - which are waitlist positions, meaning even if successful you may not be appointed to a role until later in the year - click here to head to the TfL careers vacancies portal.
